Autism Spectrum Disorder

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder distinguished by persistent deficits in expressive and receptive language, social interactions, and behavioral functions. Individuals with ASD have repetitive behavior patterns that can be impulsive and limits their functioning socially and cognitively. ASD is a chronic condition that currently has no cure, but those affected with ASD improve their functioning with early intervention. People with ASD have varying degrees of presentation. Therefore, treatment must be individualized to meet their specific needs.

What are the treatments for ASD?

Typically, treatment of ASD requires a comprehensive approach that focuses on maximizing functioning to move the individual towards independence and good quality of life. The treatment for ASD includes:

  • Behavioral interventions
  • School interventions
  • Complementary and alternative therapies
  • Medication interventions

The treatment goal is to address the core deficits of ASD and aim to:

  • Improve language and communication skills
  • Improve play skills and social functioning
  • Improve adaptive skills
  • Improve cognitive functioning
  • Decrease negative affects and behaviors.
